Project 1
Strategies for working on project #1:
Answer, in your own words, what is an irrational being? (Use what we discussed in class as well as the Project #1 Requirement Sheet for more information).
An irrational being refers to a living thing that is meshed with either living or nonliving things. They serve the purpose of expressing things that are not normal in nature and thus it has to be weird or uncommon.
Once you have a definition, begin to visualize, in your head, what such a creature might look like. Below, create a list of possible creatures: (for example, half fish half bird or half robot half human). Look to the Project #1 Idea Folder for visual examples.
YOU ARE CREATING NEW CREATURES, NOT USING MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES OR ONES YOU HAVE SEEN IN FILM ETC.
1. Polar bears which experienced a split in their evolutionary history. One of the splits have whale like bodies and walrus like tusks specialized for water travel. The other evolved in a way that it acquired a bearded seal’s face with a tail resembling an arctic fox’s and wings like those of birds. Due to their mobility on air and land they didn’t need their white color anymore, at least all of it.
2. Multiple birds which beaks resemble different tools.
3. Things in nature that resemble something else but in this instance it is actually that something else, especially flowers. Some look like trumpets, others like humans walking or even bats flying.
4. Polar bear with a head of a seal, a tail of a fox, a happier color, and teeth that resemble those of a walrus
With one of the creatures you have listed in mind, think of a landscape where that creature would either be completely out of place or where they would fit in nicely.Consider working with humor and being wholly absurd or take a more practical approach. Consider what type of world, for example, a fish with wings would need to live in. List with specific details what type of world or landscape your creature would exist in:
I think that the polar bear would stay in its current habitat simply because by being changed into a wacky bearded seal its diet revolves around shrimp, crabs, whelks, and clams. If anything were to change would be that they would spend slightly more time in water compared to a normal polar bear. Basically the arctic plains where there is just ice and snow.
Our next step is to find HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGERY that will allow us to create the world and creatures in our heads. YOU WILL NOT FIND THE PERFECT IMAGE ONLINE. Project #1 is about making that image. You will find the pieces to create that “perfect” image online. For example, if I want to create a fish with wings, I would need to find at least one image of a pair of wings and one image of a fish. You will more than likely need at least five images to work with.
List the types of images you will search for:
1. Arctic Fox
2. Polar Bear
3. Walrus
4. Bearded seal
5. Red panda
Before you go any further, stop and answer the first question on your Project Critique Form, which is:
Describe, in complete sentences, what your project is about. (What you are defining here is your intent; the idea(s) you would like to convey to your audience).
At first I wanted to juxtapose the polar bear with its diet which consists of walrus, seals, whales, etc. But then as I worked on the project I realized that I wanted to make it even more irrational simply because thought my idea was too simplistic. Now I feel that I have achieved that goal. When I showed my work to people, they can see where the different parts derived from but they are still confused and wander about the chosen combination.
Do you intend to tell a story? Do you intend to be humorous? What is your intent?
To some extent I would like to tell a story because I got some of the inspiration for my work from a story I heard as a child.
Write your intent for the first project below:
I wanted to juxtapose the polar bear and its prey. Also I wanted to connect it to the story of “How the Bear Lost its Tail”.

Strategies for working on project #2:
In your own words, what is a picture plane?
The plane or frame in which a picture of piece of art takes place.
What are the boundaries of our picture plane in Photoshop?
The boundaries of our picture plane in Photoshop, I believe, it refers to our max layer size.
Start by deciding what the 2-Dimensional “space” of your canvas will be. This is the space that an object or character is leaving. This could be anything from a computer screen to a book or a painted canvas.
What is your 2-Dimensional space?
A book
What is your subject? (the object, character or creature that is leaving your 2-Dimensial space)
One of the monsters from “Where the wild things are”,also the setting of the book coming alive.
Next, decide the new space/realm/reality that your subject is moving into. Your subject is leaving the 2-dimensional space of say your computer screen or painted canvas. Consider what happens when they enter the new space?
What is your subject doing as they move to the “new” space? Did they break the computer screen or tear the canvas to escape the 2-Dimensional space?
They are scared of our world and thus it is moving towards the closet in order to hide from Max.
What is your character doing in the new space? Are they standing around or are they using spray paint to color their new world? Consider how the two spaces (the original 2-dimensional space and the new space your character has entered) change or need to change as your subject enters into them or leave them.
The monster is in the process of leaving the book, while maybe one of its friends signals it to hurry up.
What is your project goal for our second work Beyond Confines?
My goal for this second project is to do a better job at combining the pictures I’ll be using, so they can flow better and the setting doesn’t seem to distorted.

Strategies for working on project #3:
What is Surrealism? (Answer as if you were explaining Surrealism to a friend)
Surrealism refers to the idea of putting one’s inner thoughts, dreams, inner self, etc. into a form of art.
List at least three elements of artistic style that commonly define Surrealism:(For example, one example of Surrealistic style is an unnatural use of colors)
1. Unnatural use of characters
2. Juxtaposition
3. Usually thematic
From the provided selection of Surrealist art, CHOOSE one piece.
ARIST NAME: Vladimir Kush
TITLE OF PIECE: Sunrise by the Ocean
Artistic Style is defined as, but not limited to:
How an artist handles line, color, shape, movement, visual weight, etc., these, among many more, define what an artist’s style is. Style defines the visual appearance of an artist’s work.
Style helps to convey meeting. It is the language of our piece/how we communicate ideas.
Style can encompass anything from the choice of subject to the feelings expressed to the choices of the elements of design.
For Example, in Salvador Dali’s “The Temptation of St. Anthony,” the figures are distorted; they are transforming. Therefore, one stylistic attribute of this piece would be: The unnatural distortion/transformation of subjects or figures.
From your selected piece, list three visual elements that represent your artist’s style. Explain each element in detail. (If you need more space use the lined space on the reverse of page 3).
1.Unnatural yet fitting distortion
2.Thematic (birth, new, and construction)
3.Mellow colors (browns, yellows, orange) which help reinforce the themes.
What is your project #3 goal? (Consider building off of previous project #3 goals)
My goal for project three is to resemble the thematic ideas that the original work had by also changing some stylistic techniques.

Project 4
Strategies for working on project #4:I.Consider this question: “What will people need to either survive or perhaps use as a luxury item in the year 3000?” Use this question as a starting point in researching what you want to create and market as a product or service.
Visit the site: http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20141016-your-life-on-earth
Look at how much has changed in the world in just the time you have been alive.
How much different will our world be in roughly 1000 years? Look at how current political and global climates are changing. In a few hundred years, what will they be like? What will the earth be/look like?
Below, describe what your imaged future would be like. BE SPECIFIC.
(Is it a wasteland, a utopia, a technologically enhanced world where people are more
machine than human?)It resembles planet of the apes in the way that apes rule the world. Due to instinct animals focus on survival and thus wars are to be expected. The product I am envisioning is a booster pack which allows apes to move around freely in battle or even to pick up the daily newspaper.
What product are you creating that can only exist in the year 3000? Write what
that product is and how it works/what it does below:
As described above, my product is a booster pack. As it resembles a jet pack, it cannot be active continuously due to technological limits. It basically allows the individual to reach a high acceleration in seconds multiple times within a specific timeframe.
How will your product be DIFFERENT FROM A CURRENT PRODUCT that exists today?
Your product should be dramatically different.
There is no product that resembles my product today, that I am aware of. It will basically be like having a jet engine in your back.
Who is your product intended for? How will your market it (type of imagery/type of ad)?
(For example: the target is the teen demographic. The marketing would involve imagery
that appeals to a younger generation. This imagery would be more playful. Also, how
the imagery is shown (what media is used) is be integral. Perhaps the ads are
shown via gigantic interactive projections on the sides of buildings near schools).
The product is targeted towards all ages and genders, but it has a focus on 18-35-year-old males. Since it can be used by everyone in everyday life, the ad would be able to be placed pretty much anywhere. There could also be a military use but then the military grade product is not available to the public and thus it would only advertised in governmental institutions.
Based upon what you have decided to create, as well as, who the product of service is for, write what your project goal is.
Consider how you want to illustrate your product, logo, and ad.
(Will your aim be to create a very clean illustration meant for a business-minded individual or will your designs be bright and slightly goofy to appeal to a younger audience).
Work in what your goals with Adobe Illustrator are.
(Based on your experience so far with Illustrator, what are your goals for working with the program? Do you hope to be able to have a high-level of skill with Illustrator or a working knowledge of Illustrator?)
Project #4 Goal:
II.Designing a logo:
nn As you move to create your logo, you must first pre-‐visualize how your logo will look and how this look will represent your product. Will your product itself be visually represented in your logo?
Your logo design must be well thought out and carefully crafted. (DO NOT RUSH THIS)
Your logo should be designed so that it fits with your target demographic (who you want to buy your product).
Before you draw your logo, list three adjectives that describe your product: For example: (strong, honest, upstanding) or (whimsical, playful, exciting) Your word choices should represent aspects that your consumer base values.
1. Powerful
2. Equivalent of manly in ape terms
3. Direct
Consider whether it is best to include a name in your logo. If the name lacks personality it will often not add anything to your logo design.
What is your product’s name?
Booster packs

Project 5
Strategies for working on project #5:
Your goal is to transform your selected artist’s piece altering, in some fashion: subject, context and color, to make it your own. (Context refers to how your subject(s) and environment interact)
This project will be made 50% in Photoshop and 50% in Illustrator.
How (the methodology) and what techniques/tools are used, is up to you.
In class we will discuss how to integrate both programs into your workflow. This process will likely consist of working on or editing different assets (subject, foreground, background etc.) and visual attributes in one program then adding details or certain effects in another.
Based on the artwork you have seen over the duration of the semester, choose a visual
artist and one piece by that artist that you will work from (take inspiration from).
YOU ARE NOT JUST COPYING A PIECE. YOU ARE CREATING YOUR OWN CONTENT.
You are to select one and only one piece to work from. You MUST stick with your selection.
Artist Name: Roberto Mamani
Title of Piece: Color, Earth, Andes Series-Unknown Boy
Media (Digital illustration, oil painting, pen and ink, etc.):
Potential Artists and Works to Choose From:
Pablo Picasso -Guernica Raphael Vicenzi ‐Portraits
Vincent Van Gogh ‐Starry Night Diego Rivera -Man, Controller of The Mathieu Beaulieu -Inspiredology The Universe
Florian Nicolle (Neo) ‐Coeur De Pirate Camille Pissarro -Potato Harvest Edgar Degas-‐ Two Dancers at Rest Alphonse Mucha -Summer
Consider how this artist approaches their subject matter. Do they create pieces that
tell stories or do they focus more on simply evoking a mood? You should be able to
find discussions or interviews with this artist when doing your research that help
you determine how this artist works/creates their art.
DO NOT simply choose a piece that you think will be easiest. You have from now until the
final exam date to complete this project. Your project must reflect a large investment of
time and effort. This project will likely take upwards of 12‐14 hours.
After you have selected your piece to work from, determine how you relate to your selected piece. What is it about the content that speaks to you? Does your selected work tell a story? Does it elicit a specific emotional response? (Does it make you happy, sad, feel calm, etc.)
How do you relate to your piece? (Consider why you chose it)
(EXPLAIN):
The artist is from Bolivia which is where I am from. He tends to take inspiration from the natural environment and he mixes it with natural beings like humans, animals, or Bolivian legends. I can also relate a lot of thematic elements the author incorporates into his pieces.
From your selected piece, list three visual elements that represent your artist’s style. Explain each element in detail. (If you need more space use the lines on the back page). Consider how you answered this question for your surrealistic piece.
1) Color choice is particularly different. Very bright and dark color mixture throughout the piece. Vibrant and kind pop art-ish.
2) Thematic statement. Image portrays an altiplano child but in order to do so it uses figures typically seen in the Aymara culture.
3) Most if not all objects that make up the main character are basic geometric shapes. This motif is seen in many of this artist’s pieces.
Next, find out how this specific piece is able to relate that feeling or story to you. Is it through the subject, the environment, color choice, proximity of subjects to each other and their environment (context), etc.?
Explain how you think your piece conveys its story or emotion to you: Consider artistic style (how images are represented).
All the visual elements listed above convey the story and emotion on the character. Those were all choices the artist made with a purpose. The colors are mostly warm, the actual portrayal of the shapes help establish a specific flow, and the expression accomplished in the pieces are not negative.
In your opinion, what is the story of your selected piece?
The piece depicts a child who seems to be crying. he is no one's child and yet he is the most important being in the world. Why does he cry? because he is constantly forgotten by people as he is the child that lives within every person that disappears as they grow up.
Similar to project #3, you will take your selected piece and plug in your own content. You will substitute your own subject, your own environment and so on.
YOUR SELECTED WORK SERVES AS ONLY AS A VISUAL GUIDE. Before you begin gathering your imagery/sketching/etc., decide what the intent of your piece is, WHAT IS YOUR PROJECT #5 GOAL?
What elements from your source piece will you keep?I would ideally keep the color and the geometric style.
What elements from your source piece will you Change?
I will change the subject matter and add more of it.
How do you intend to integrate Illustrator into your workflow?
(Be Specific. List the tools you will use and how you plan to use them)
I will most likely make a base drawing with the subject matter I want to include in Illustrator.
How do you intend to integrate Photoshop into your work flow?
(Be Specific. List the tools you will use and how you plan to use them)
I will then be adding most of the detail in Photoshop once the base is completed.
